In today's digital world, typing goes hand in hand with productivity.
Typing speed ranges from hunt-and-peck to over 120 words per minute.
Unlike other typing trainers, hightype ACTUALLY monitors and tracks finger placement to give personalized coaching.
HighType uses your phone or webcam to track your fingers and keyboard.
Calibrated algorithms detect your finger movements and keys through the camera.
Hightype can provide more accurate training based on your typing habits.
Whenever you're ready.
Ten fingers. One better way to type.
About hightype
A typing coach that watches your hands through a camera and tells you, keystroke by keystroke, whether you used the right finger.
Why it exists
Typing trainers check which key you pressed. They can't see which finger pressed it, so habits like hunt-and-peck or typing with two fingers go unnoticed, and those habits cap how fast and comfortably you can type. HighType watches the finger.
How it works
- See the hands. Any webcam, or an iPhone through Continuity Camera, looks down at the keyboard. Google's MediaPipe hand tracker finds 21 points on each hand about 50 times a second.
- Learn your setup. You rest your fingers on the home row, then place four markers on Q, P, Z and / so HighType knows where every key is in the picture, even at an angle.
- Check every key. On a home-row key, if every fingertip is still at home, the right finger pressed it. On any other key, the fingertip sitting on that key is the one that pressed it. When the picture is unclear, HighType says "unavailable" instead of guessing.
- Coach you. A green, orange or red pulse after each key, a check on the finger you should use, live speed and accuracy, and a per-finger report after every lesson.
Who it's for
Students learning to type, and anyone self-taught who wants to fix their habits without a teacher watching their hands.
How accurate is it?
On our labeled test recording, which included wrong fingers on purpose, HighType checked 85 of 94 keystrokes and got every one right, catching all 16 wrong-finger presses it checked.
Private by design
The video never leaves your computer. Hand tracking runs inside your browser, nothing is uploaded, and your progress is stored only in this browser.

Is the right camera selected?
Choose the camera that can be positioned to view your keyboard and hands.
A webcam that you can position to see your keyboard is perfect. Otherwise, you can run HighType on your phone to use that camera.
Is your keyboard entirely in frame?
Check the camera view. Make sure the full keyboard—from the left edge to the right edge—is visible.
Show your hands over the keyboard.
Rest both hands in your normal typing position for one second. Check that the finger labels follow the matching fingertips.
Are left and right labeled correctly?
Check the L and R wrist markers in the preview. If they are reversed, turn on “Image is mirrored.”
